Subject: (Numbers 13-15).
Two sins that had critical consequences were committed by the people of Israel in the wilderness, " the sin of the Golden Calf " and " the sin of the spies." These sins are typical characteristics of two weaknesses of the people of Israel in all generations .
a :
the tendency to seek other gods (in every sense ) in times of crisis.
And the second :
lack of real motivation to inherit the land . These weaknesses increase and again throughout the history of the people of Israel.
The severity of these sins is expressed in the Bible by their respective punishments.
The sin of the golden calf was the first major crisis in the inner pact between the Holy One and the people of Israel , the " Covenant of Sinai" ( "I have raised with you on eagles' wings and brought you to you to me "( Exodus 19:4 ).
The breakdown of this intimacy is symbolized by the breaking of the first tablets. After this sin, relations between the Holy One and His people is weakened , and were less intimate." My messenger will go before you" ( Exodus 32:34 ): a new order and less privacy to continue and strengthen the covenant of Sinai was necessary . The gravity of the sin of the calf is his shame and sorrow also charge the next generations, "I said Holy One, You wept in vain, but I will decree weeping for generations."
The severity of the " sin of the spies" is greater than the calf, and is expressed in the lack of preparedness of the people to face the challenges necessary to inherit the land.
This expresses sin on the one hand , the crisis of faith that began with the sin of the calf and it took God to doubt the continued existence of the people , "I will smite with plague and destroy them, however I will make thee a big and powerful, more than he "( Numbers 14:12 ) people. Until Moses asks in despair: " Absolve the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of Your kindness, and hast forgiven this people, from Egypt until now .
And God said:
I have acquitted according to your word " (Numbers 14:19-20 ).
Moreover, the sin of the spies is above sin of the calf by a lack of faith in themselves to face the difficulties:" We seemed like grasshoppers in our eyes and so we were before their eyes " ( Numbers 13:33 ). This sin caused the entrance to the land was delayed by an entire generation.
Unlike the sin of the calf whose roots are linked to the past of the people of Israel in Egypt, in the tendency to seek other gods in times of crisis, the sin of the spies has two transgressions:
lack of faith in God's promise to give them the land and lack of faith in the " own " people's capacity to cope with the difficulties necessary to inherit the land and thus realize the promise of God to Abraham. For this reason, its gravity exceeds that of the sin of the calf.
Great commentators analyzed the case of spies and tried to clarify whose transgression is greater here . Does the transgression of the spies who were not satisfied with passing information to the leaders of their tribes , but they turned - over - to Moses and Aaron , and they made a delicate public information for the people to rebel against leadership which was leading to the promised land ? Or is the transgression of the people is even greater because it received the interpretation of informants and declared : " We can not attack people as it is stronger than us" ( Numbers 13:31 ) and did not believe in the Divine promise of inheriting earth?
And yet the great amazement : how can a people who lived in Egypt hundreds of years of harsh slavery that " I made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks, and all work in the field. All submitted their works , making them hard to work with" ( Exodus 1:14) with an ancient hope of returning to the land of their fathers ( " And the fourth generation will return here " Genesis 15:16) , you can go back in a moment test ?
Three interesting and relevant reviews are in the words of the commentators.
He writes : "It may be said that major wars like that are not appropriate for our generation but for our children, who will grow up without humiliation and slavery. Therefore said: ` For the stronger we ' and not our children ." That is, the spies wanted to prevent entry to the ground because, as representatives of the people , knew the spiritual weakness of this and know that this weakness would prevent them beat in the fight .

Israel Hypocrisy
Then the Lord said:
Because this people draw near me with their words
and honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me,
And their reverence for Me consists of tradition learned by rote,
